As if to save me my next question, God said, "Enter by the left." (I peeked
    right: only a window there. So I went left.)

    The first room was an old kitchen, sunlit but impoverished, with one of
    those distasteful arborite and chrome tables, and a similar chair, from the
    sixties. I quickly examined the room for clues, but something drew me
    toward the center of the house. A hallway there, a slowly developing
    vortex, not unpleasant, drew me inward and down, into the earth.

    I was afraid of suffocation, but God said to draw the rock into my mouth,
    then lungs. After awhile, I was breathing rock. My body slowly absorbed
    the rock. It came in under my sternum, grasped my heart in slow motion,
    pulled it free, spread it for hundreds of feet, staining the mineral.

    At some point I rose back into the house again. This time, a knife, a fruit,
    and a note lay on the kitchen table, in the sunlight. On the note was
    drawn a name, a date, and a heart.

    I looked out the window, saw a woman in the bare dirt garden, a vegetable
    garden, I think. She was kneeling before a seed packet with a purple and
    white illustration. I approached. She looked up. Her eyes filled my entire
    vision, bigger than a movie screen. They fluxed slowly between different
    personalities.

    Hand in hand we walked off, through a forest of evergreens, then into a
    small meadow. "Oh, not one of these meadow-in-the-forest scenes," I
    thought. The trance withered at this touch of cynicism. I opened my eyes,
    sat quietly. The sunlight had retreated to splotch the corner of the
    swimming pool. A dragonfly etched a new horizon across the garden.

    "God," I said, "could this beauty thing be a woman?""Haven't I made all
    the flowers?" God said. "Women and men?"
